FAIR AUCTION DOES WELL
The Matagorda County Fair Livestock auction took place Saturday with over 200 youth selling their project animals for a total of $366,400. Even though there were 19 less animals sold this year than last, the total take was $20,000 more. Lambs were the only thing that didn't seem to be selling extremely well.

Fair Board member Robert Matthews said rodeo ticket sales was above average this year. Saturday nights rodeo crowd was one of the largest he'd ever seen in the arena.

SURFSIDE ST. PATRICK'S PARADE
Surfside Beach is preparing for their 25th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade which kicks off at 1 p.m. Saturday at Village Hall. The event is free.

The parade will travel down Jettyview Road from Village Hall, turn left on Surf Drive, right on Texas Street and left on Seashell Drive.

About 60 entrants are expected for the parade. Registration will be at 8 am and judging at 11am.

The annual costume contest has been canceled this year because Stahlman Park is under construction. Parade officials said the contest is too difficult to stage without the central meeting place. The costume contest is expected to return next year, after the Stahlman Park facility gets up and running.

BOOK SALE
Friends of the Bay City Public Library are hosting a Book Sale on Saturday from 10a.m. to 4p.m. This will be at the Bay City Public Library.

BC POLICE REPORT SEVERAL BURGLARIES
The Bay City Police Department received six reports of burglaries in southern Bay City last weekend.

Most of the merchandise taken was home electronic equipment. A Palm Village Apartments resident was the first to report several pieces of home electronic equipment missing, followed by residents on Avenue G, Horn Road and Avenue L.  TV's and other home electronics as well as personal items were taken from the homes that were broken into.

A storage building behind a home on Sixth Street was hit on Sunday. That homeowner told police that he went to check out a noise he heard and found the building broken into and several pieces of fishing equipment stolen.

Also on Sunday, a burglar broke in to Color Mart in the 2700 block of Avenue F and took a cash register.

Sullivan said it is too early to tell if all of the burglaries are related but anyone with any information regarding these crimes should contact the Bay City Police Department at 245-8500 and as for Det. Sgt. Mike Mirelez.

VFW AUXILIARY TO HOST DISTRICT MEETING
VFW Post 2438 Ladies Auxiliary will host the District meeting at 10 a.m. Tomorrow.  The meeting include 16 districts from the area. District 16 Ladies Auxiliary President Eileen Latimer and state Ladies Auxiliary President Cleo Hornsby will be present.

This meeting is the annual visit by the state president as she conducts an official inspection of each district.

Texas boasts over 32,000 auxiliary members that work for all veterans and their families.

TCEQ FINES BRAZORIA COUNTY COMPANIES
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality announced Wednesday it levied about $60,000 in fines against two Brazoria County companies.

Conoco Phillips agreed to a penalty of $10,000 for failing to prevent unauthorized releases of 16,142 pounds of sulfur dioxide, 1,003 pounds of carbon monoxide, 150 pounds of nitrogen oxide and 3,798 pounds of volatile organic compounds on May 15, 2009, at its Sweeny refinery, according to commission documents.

Conoco Phillips paid $5,000 to the commission and $5,000 to a the Texas PTA Clean School Bus program, which retrofits older school buses with clean diesel.

Sweeny refinery spokeswoman Regina Slaydon said “Mechanical failure in a process unit caused the flaring. Corrective actions have been completed.”

The commission also fined Equistar Chemicals $50,000 for failing to prevent a release Dec. 20, 2007 at its Chocolate Bayou facility. Equistar Chemicals, together with other subsidiaries of LyondellBasell Chemical Co., have filed a petition for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. Its Chocolate Bayou facility was shutdown in 2009.

The fine has not yet been paid. Payment of the fine is pending the outcome of the bankruptcy proceedings.

SAFE SITTER PROGRAM
Angleton Danbury Medical Center has hosted the Safe Sitter program for 19 years. The one-day basic class teaches adolescent baby sitters how to handle crises, keep their charges secure and nurture and guide a young child.

The next class is from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 19 in the Professional Office Building Auditorium. The Safe Sitters’ motto of “Better Sitters today … Better Parents tomorrow,” reflects the teaching methods used in the program.

BBQ BENEFIT
A benefit in Memory of Gloria Pulsifer will be held at the Creek Tavern in Bay City Saturday.  They'll be serving BBQ plates beginning at 11 am.  You can dine in or carry out.

In addition a special account has been set up at IBC bank for those who wish to make cash donations. Just ask for the deposit to be made to the Gloria Pulsifer Fund.

American Red Cross will hold  Lifeguard Training classes beginning March 19th. The course fee is $175 which includes all materials.

RUNOFF ELECTION DATE SET
The runoff election for Matagorda County Precinct 2 commissioner will be held April 13th with one week of early voting April 5th throuh the 9th.  Early voting will take place at the Matagorda County Courthouse.
Election day polling places will be announced at a later date.

MEHOP GARDEN PLANTING SOON
MEHOP will begin planting our garden soon! This is a great opportunity for those who enjoy gardening and working outdoors and they could really use the help.

The garden is picked and the food is given away at the clinic, during angel food order taking and at angel food distribution.

All food left over is given to First United Methodist Church's food pantry.

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Construction and remodeling of the Boys and Girls Club in Bay City has begun.  Old flooring has been removed and walls are coming down to make a large computer room that will be part of the after-school.

More money is still needed to continue construction. So far, the club has raised approximately $200,000 for building renovation and has approximately $65,000, plus an additional $45,000 in 3 to 5 year pledges for the Founders Campaign.

The club renovations will include a learning center, an arts and craft room and offices for staff and the executive director.

The cost to open the club is approximately $225,000 to renovate the space and $75,000 for furniture, fixtures and equipment.

RIO COLORADO RED CROSS VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION
The Rio Colorado Chapter of the Red Cross will hold a volunteer orientation at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 16th at the Bay City office located on the first floor at 2200 7th St.

BACODA MEETING ON DRUGS
The Matagorda County Community Coalition and The Bay Area Council On Drugs and Alcohol will have a public meeting and community presentation aimed at addressing the prescription drug and alcohol abuse concerns in our area.

CAST PERFORMANCE
The Community Actors of South Texas (CAST) have announced plans to perform "Alibis" a murder mystery comedy by Peter Kennedy.

They will present their show at the Bay City Service Center Friday and Saturday March 19th & 20th at 7:30pm followed by a Sunday 2:30pm Matinee. Then they take their show to The Matagorda School Auditorium for Friday and Saturday performances the following week.

Tickets for the show will be available only at the door. Admission will be $8 for adults or just $5 for students.

They will also be holding a silent auction at the event to raise funds to help pay for their planned summer production of "The Music Man".

MARKET DAYS RETURNS TO SQUARE

Bay City hasn't had a Market Days on the Square since November. The December show was held at the Bay city Civic Center and the committee decided not to attempt a January or February Market Day because of questionable weather.

March 20th, and the following third Saturday of each month we can once again enjoy a Market Day celebration for the rest of this year.
